We are deeply saddened that Lendon Scantlebury, sculptor, curator and artist, passed away on 11 January 2017.
Lendon worked with the Turn End Trust to curate three wonderful sculpture exhibitions here at Turn End in 2014, 2015 and 2016. He was an incredibly vibrant, creative and enthusiastic person, who brought joy and beauty to the garden through the exhibitions, which were enjoyed by thousands of visitors.
Lendon was born in Barbados, the sights, sounds and smells of which recall deep meanings for him. He was a painter and sculptor, who worked for over 30 years in the bronze foundry and sculpture casting business, restoring as well as creating new work. He brought together a selection of other talented artists to create exhibitions of sculpture at many venues in the region, including Ardington, Bothy Vineyard, Turn End. He carefully selected pieces to complement each site and introduced visitors to a range of media and styles of sculptures, as well as providing delight, discovery and exploration.
Lendon actively encouraged young and aspiring artists and he planned to endow a foundation to enable more young people to discover the art within them. This will now be undertaken by his friends and fellow artists so that his name will continue to inspire and motivate.
It was a joy and privilege for all of us here at the Turn End Trust, Turn End garden and the studios to work with Lendon. His talent, dynamism and enthusiasm will be dearly missed and we send our thoughts and condolences to his family and friends.
